S6, Ep4. Anna and Mary face a crisis and a figure from the past surprises those above and below stairs. S6, Ep5.

Violet embroils the Minister of Health in the hospital row, but his visit ends in catastrophe. Mary's suspicions are aroused. S6, Ep6. The news is personal as the Crawley heir, a distant cousin, has perished aboard the ship.

New arrivals come to Downton and new alliances are formed as intrigue rules both family and staff. Evelyn Napier comes calling with the unexpected Mr. Pamuk for a hunt at Downton. Housemaid Gwen wants to become a secretary, forcing many conversations about her decision. Edith makes her play for Matthew. It haunts Mary for years and spawned a half-dozen storylines until she could finally put it behind her. Downton throws its doors open as a convalescent home for officers, forcing tremendous changes to the status quo.

Isobel is power-hungry. Edith makes herself useful. Mary pretends Richard Carlisle makes her happy. Tom Branson tries to ruin dinner in the name of socialism. William proposes to Daisy before shipping out. Ethel plays a dangerous game. This is Downton running on all cylinders, with a ton of scintillating plotlines unfolding upstairs and down. BatesWatch: Anna tracks the self-exiled Bates to a pub in Kirkbymoorside and learns to use a curling iron on Mary.

She might get lonely there. Christmas at Downton! Sybil is pregnant and Cora talks Robert into weary acceptance. Carlisle is dispensed with, his dignity barely intact. Mary faces her past head-on and receives forgiveness and understanding. Mason asks Daisy to be his daughter. Matthew finally pops the question. Plus: The servants ball! Thomas dances with the Dowager! BatesWatch: Bates gets a last-minute reprieve and everyone is relieved that he only has to spend the rest of his life in jail.

Anna decides not to leave Downton after all. But the staffing issue isn't resolved, and Carson may yet give Thomas his marching papers. Will Thomas leave Downton Abbey for good? And if so, will he find a job and even find love? Or will the black dog of depression finally overtake him? It happened for Anna and Bates, Carson and Mrs. Hughes, and even, kind of, William and Daisy. Imagine a cottage where a sewing machine softly hums and pages of a weighty historical tome quietly turn as Baxter and Molesley grow old together, happily!

Patmore and Mr. Patmore is free to reap her rewards and look to her distant retirement. But will she spend that dream of retirement alone, or will the blossoming friendship between her and Mr.

Mason evolve into something more? Will Daisy Ever Learn? Daisy has learned plenty and mastered her exams. But while this book-smart assistant cook may be ready to take on the workforce, she is still far from being a scholar of the human heart. Will she remain oblivious to Andy's affection, Mr. Mason's advice and Mrs. Patmore's wisdom?

Or will she embrace the love and support that surrounds her? If Julian Fellowes is merciful, and Violet's trip to Provence was her only Downton departure, then we expect her to have the very last word—and that it be every bit as clever, wise, and flawless as all the zingers that came before!
