Thread starter Cochran Start date Jan 10, Cochran Well-Known Member Jan 10, Hi Yesterday driving the car. I had added 1 1. Do i need to get any coolant additive to add into the tank?
If need to. What to buy and available at where? As from the manual. It stated that additive is not all suitable for bmw lei. Thank you. Re: Engine coolant water topup First thing to check for is a leak Any pool of water on the floor when you drive off in the morning?
Coz if leak, no point pouring in expensive coolant also If confirmed not leaking, then not quite necessary to top up coolant. Just distilled water should do. Typically, water tends to evaporate, but coolant does not.
The main function of the coolant is to prevent rust. Originally Posted by attack eagle. If you don't want to run a "coolant" per say, pick up a gallon of distilled water and some water wetter which you can get at your local autoparts store.
It's a small bottle with red liquid iirc. Don't EVER use tap water. Not good. Sure you can. Just make sure you use distilled. Distilled or not, water wetter or not. Agreed, it isn;t a long term solution, but it is not going make you engine go poof either. And as for oil, Mobil 1 Full Syn. They may end up damaging the cooling system of your car. With time, they lead to corrosion and damage to the cylinder gasket, water pump, and radiator.
They may also damage your engine to the extent that you will require a new one. Usually, BMW coolants have no phosphate and nitrite, unlike their counterparts.
This feature is the reason as to why they resist corrosion and build-up on aluminum components. Also, it is essential to note that the BMW coolant does not come pre-mixed. Be careful to follow the mixing instructions. Too much water is inadequate for proper boilover and freeze-protection. On the other hand, too much antifreeze concentrate may cause your engine to overheat. However, this is not recommendable.
Always ensure you have a spare coolant at boot of your car for such cases. Water helps to cool down the engine but not as well as a coolant. Water boils fast yet at a lower temperature than the genuine coolant. Its primary purpose is to absorb the excess heat generated by a running engine. Coolant deteriorates with time. Therefore, it is recommendable to check your engine coolant at least twice a year.
Alternatively, you can schedule your checks after every 30, or 50, miles. If the coolant level has gone down, you should top it up. To sum it all, coolant is a vital component that every car owner must-have. Both coolants are highly effective on all BMW models. They have no nitrite or phosphate, the major corrosion catalysts.
They give your engine and cooling system optimal protection against boil overs, heat damage, and corrosion. One of the best selling automotive engine coolant for BMW.
